Sporting Kansas City cruises to victory
Sporting KC comfortably defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 on Sunday night at the Stubhub Center in Los Angeles. Daniel Salloi, a striker for Sporting KC, made the breakthrough goal in the 56th minute off of a corner kick. Five minutes later, Johnny Russell doubled KC’s lead after splitting two defenders and then slotting home a goal on the night of his birthday. The LA Galaxy were unable to find a reply even after subbing on Swedish star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Ibrahimovic doesn’t get start
LA Galaxy manager Sigi Schmid decided not to start Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the second straight game against Sporting KC. After a dream debut last week against cross-town rival LAFC, Zlatan couldn’t recreate the same magic. Schmid made the decision to sub on the Galaxy’s newest signing in the 62nd minute moments after Johnny Russell scored to make it 2-0. Ibrahimovic recorded two shots, one off a free-kick, but didn’t get past goalkeeper Tim Melia. Ike Opara, a defender for Kansas City, denied Ibrahimovic a goal-scoring opportunity in the 91st minute with some excellent defensive play.
Melia has career game
Sporting KC keeper Tim Melia recorded 10 saves against the Galaxy for his first clean sheet of the season. Melia’s 10 saves mark not only the best performance for a goalkeeper in the MLS this season but also a club record for most saves in a game for a Kansas City keeper. Two of Melia’s saves came against Ibrahimovic. He also had a fantastic diving save in the first half to deny Galaxy defender Ashley Cole.
