Big 12 Bounce: OSU, ISU hot while Baylor stutters

Iowa State vs Texas Tech

Iowa State needed 45 minutes to defeat Texas Tech, 82-80. It was a hard-fought game, as both teams went into halftime and overtime with the same score. The Cyclones’ 3-point shooting pushed them over the edge. Monte Morris and Matt Thomas led the way for the Cyclones, combining for 43 points.

Although Tech had four players score double digits, it had a hard time shooting from the field, shooting 39 percent. Devon Thomas failed to get the game-winning 3-pointer off in time. Niem Stevenson led the Red Raiders with 17 points and seven rebounds.

 

Texas vs West Virginia

After coach Bob Huggins collapsed in the first half, West Virginia steamrolled Texas 77-62. WVU passed the ball well, tallying 20 assists as a team. Jevon Carter led the way for the Mountaineers, scoring 24 points, with Lamont West coming off the bench to score a career-high 23.

Texas started the game on a 12-2 run but failed to maintain the lead as it went into halftime down 14. The Longhorns struggled from behind the arc, shooting 3-for-13. Jarrett Allen Texas with 17 points and seven rebounds.

 

Oklahoma vs Baylor

No. 9 Baylor survived a late rally from Oklahoma, winning 60-54. Baylor turned the ball over 13 times, giving the Sooners a chance to get back in the game. Jonathan Motley was the leading scorer for the Bears with 21 points and 16 rebounds.

OU had a terrible day shooting the ball, making 32 percent of its shots. The Sooners went on a 21-8 run to cut the lead within two. Kameron McGusty was the only Sooner to score double digits with 13 points.

 

TCU vs Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks blew out TCU 87-68. KU started the second half on a 17-8 run and never looked back. Frank Mason III led the Jayhawks with 20 points and Devonte Graham tallied 17 points and seven rebounds.

The Horned Frogs struggled from 3-point land, shooting 26 percent. The blowout was because of TCU shooting 36 percent in the second half. Alex Robinson led the Horned Frogs with 15 points.

 

Saturday Games

West Virginia vs TCU

Although No. 12 West Virginia shot 36 percent from the field, it escaped Fort Worth with a 61-60 victory. Daxter Miles Jr sank the game-winning free throw after a controversial call with 4.8 seconds left. Jevon Carter led the Mountaineers with 15 points.

The Horned Frogs dominated in all statistics except free-throw percentage, shooting 60 percent. Desmond Bane air-balled the game-winning 3-pointer at the end of the game. Jaylen Fisher finished the game with 18 points and four assists.

 

Baylor vs Iowa State

Iowa State defeated No. 9 Baylor in a hard-fought battle, 72-69. The Cyclones held the Bears scoreless for more than a minute in the final two minutes. Deonte Burton finished with 22 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with 1:24 left on the clock. ISU is on a five-game winning streak.

Jonathan Motley’s 27 points and 11 rebounds was not enough for the Bears. Baylor shot only five free throws. Baylor has lost five of its past eight games after starting 20-1.

 

Kansas State vs Oklahoma

Oklahoma cruised past Kansas State 81-51 as coach Lon Kruger recorded his 600th win. The Sooners shot 44 percent from the field. Khadeem Lattin led OU with a double-double thanks to 17 points and 10 rebounds.

This was a game K-State wants to forget as it shot 25 percent from the field. The Wildcats turned the ball over 17 times and shot 13 percent from behind the arc. Isaiah Maurice was the only player to score double digits as he came off the bench for nine minutes and recorded 11 points.

 

Kansas vs Texas

No. 3 Kansas handled Texas 77-67 to seal its 13th straight regular season Big 12 title. The Jayhawks started the game on a 12-0 run and never let the Longhorns get close. KU shot 31 percent from 3-point land. Josh Jackson tallied 18 points and five assists to be KU’s leading scorer.

Texas turned the ball over 15 times, giving KU 28 easy points. The Longhorns struggled behind the arc, shooting 18 percent. Jarrett Allen recorded another double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
