Oklahoma City made a splash Thursday on trade deadline day, picking up Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott in a trade with the Chicago Bulls. The Thunder also received a 2018 second-round pick. OKC sent Cameron Payne, Anthony Morrow and Joffrey Lauvergne as part of the deal.
Gibson is a power forward who can play great defense and can help space the floor for Russell Westbrook. He’s shooting 53.3 percent this season and will be a force in the paint with Steven Adams.
McDermott is a small forward who can score the ball. He earned the nickname “Dougie McBuckets” at Creighton because of his lights-out shooting ability and his willingness to take a big shot. McDermott is improving on the defensive end and has a chance to be the best shooter on the Thunder. He is shooting 37.6 percent this season from deep and is a career 39.9 percent shooter from 3-point land.
Westbrook will have two more players on the floor to help the offense out as the playoffs come closer. It is unclear whether Gibson and McDermott will play Friday against the Lakers, though the two were at the Thunder’s practice before the game.
